World Cup modals practice

Make a sentence starter from the left-hand and second column below and see if your partner can complete it in a way that you agree with, using words from the other two columns if they like. If they don’t know the person, team, etc that you mention, they should just guess/ make an imaginary sentence. Discuss that sentence for longer if you like, then take turns doing the same with different things from the first and second column (starting again with the whole list if you have used them all).

Useful phrases for discussing the sentences
“What do you think?”/ “Do you agree?”
“I totally agree”
“I think that is almost right, but I’d say that…”
“I’m not sure about that. I think that…”

When your teacher stops you, share one sentence that you agreed on and see what the class thinks.

Ask about anything in the table that you are not sure how to use, working together as a class to use that language to make sentences each time.

Discuss the differences between the expressions on the same line here. Some are very similar.

  • don’t have to/ mustn’t
  • should/ must
  • must/ have to
  • could possibly/ probably won’t
  • will/ would

Change groups. Without using the table, try to make statements about the World Cup which your partner can’t agree with and can’t disagree with due to their lack of knowledge, e.g. because it is a statement about a team which they know little about.
