Instructions for teachers
Photocopy the sheet or sheets that you want to use, or draw the same thing on the board, preferably in the actual shape of a ladder. Each person or team puts a counter such as an eraser or magnet on the Start Here square. The aim of the game is to climb the ladder one rung at the time by obtaining the next answer up when asking a question to the teacher or to another student. If they get the answer that is shown in the next rung up, they climb up to that rung of the ladder and can ask another question to try to climb higher. If they receive any other answer, they fall all the way down to the bottom of the ladder and so have to start from there again next time. However, they can use the same questions again if they can remember them. They take turns doing the same, stopping when they get a different answer to the next rung up each time. The winner is the first person or team to climb all the way from the bottom to the top in one go, or the person who has got highest during the game when you stop them.
Variations
To make it easier, you can have the rule that if they get the answer of the rung that they are presently on (instead of the next rung up, as they are trying to get), then they don’t fall down (but also don’t go up) and can try again from the same point. If they get any other answer, they still fall all the way down to the bottom.
