Part One: Brainstorming language to describe people
Brainstorm suitable vocabulary into these categories:
Positive personality words
Negative personality words
Positive appearance expressions
Negative appearance expressions
Appearance expressions usually associated with men
Appearance expressions usually associated with women
Compare as a class.
FCE Speaking Part One describing people
Take turns asking three questions from here, with the person answering not being allowed to look at the questions but being allowed to look at the vocabulary above.
Do you take after your mother or your father?
Who are you most similar to in your family?
What would your ideal romantic partner be like?
Can you describe your best friend?
Can you describe a favourite actor or actress?
Is there anything you would like to change about your appearance?
How would you describe your personality?
How similar are you to your parents?
When your teacher stops you, ask about any questions above you are not sure how to answer, working together to match language from the brainstorming to the questions each time.
Change groups. Take turns asking three of the same questions, but this time without being allowed to look at the vocabulary lists.
Underline important words in the task below, write a paragraph plan, then write the actual email for homework.
FCE Writing Part Two (email) task on describing people
Write your answer in 140-190 words in an appropriate style. You have 40 minutes for this task.
Write a first email from an exchange student who will stay with you and your family for two weeks. Describe:
- Yourself
- The other members of your family (especially those who live in the same house)
- The house
- The local area
And ask some questions to the student.
