Instructions for teachers

Cut up one pack of cards per 2 students (there are two packs on each sheet) and remove any cards that you don’t want to cover or haven’t presented. Ask them to shuffle and deal out five cards per person. They can look at their cards but shouldn’t show them to their partner. They have to make statements about themselves that they think will also be true to their partner, e.g. “I don’t like eating frogs”. They can discard a card if their partner responds with an expression that is one of their cards. If the opposite is true of their partner they should say “Really, I do/ don’t/ am/ aren’t” etc, in which case the person who made the original statement can’t discard any cards. The winner is the first person with no cards left in their hand, or the person who has fewest cards left when you stop them.

I don’t think there’s anything particularly radical or un-CELTA-y about this, but it’s definitely controlled practice. Some of these ideas might work for freer practice:

    So, Neither

Thanks boss. I would certainly have used this great game on friday (being the day after tomorrow :)).

‘Freer practice’ is the tag. I think perhaps the tutor might ‘bash me’ for being over-imaginative: is early days on my CELTA. I’ll keep head-scratching with the task, should scrape my assessment, eh? All the best.

    I’ll be back.
