Advice on academic bios for different situations

academic writing/ advice, recommendations and suggestions

In pairs, discuss advice you would you give these people, starting with any you like:

  • You don’t have much to put in the biography
  • You can’t cut your bio down to the required size
  • The information will probably change soon
  • You’re not sure what your research interests are
  • You feel shy about boasting about your achievements
  • Your academic past and research interests don’t seem to match
  • You are interested in many different things that are difficult to summarise
  • You don’t want to give away any personal information
  • Your bio will probably be read by many different groups of people, e.g. present students and future employers

When your teacher stops you, share one of your ideas and see what the class thinks.

Ask about any situations you are not sure about, sharing ideas as a class each time.

Give advice on other possible problems, starting with your partner’s real problems and/ or issues you can identify in their academic bio draft.
