Body idioms discussion questions

Take turns asking each other three questions from below, not looking below when it’s your turn to answer. You can ask your partner to rephrase questions if you don’t understand, so don’t ask questions which you can’t rephrase.

  • Would you turn a blind eye to your company breaking the law, or would you go to the police?
  • Would you turn your nose up at the chance to learn English online from an Indian or Filipino teacher?
  • If you were up to your eyes in work, would you ask for your boss’s help or just do the best you could?
  • When was the last time you had butterflies in your stomach?
  • Are there any games or sports that you can usually win hands down?
  • When did you last put your foot in it during a conversation? What did you say, and what was the reaction?
  • If I told you that I was impressed by your level of English, would you think I was pulling your leg? Why?
  • What’s the most mouthwatering dish that you can cook?
  • Who is your usual shoulder to cry on? Why that person?
  • Would you be happy to pay through the nose for one night in a fabulous hotel?
  • What makes your blood boil?
  • Do you have any machines or gadgets which are on their last legs? How long do you think they will last, and what will you do when they break down?
  • Do you take everything to heart? Why would you say that?
  • Have you ever been caught red handed? What were you doing, and who caught you? What were the consequences?
  • Do you have your feet on the ground or your head in the clouds? Are both possible at the same time?
  • How long can you sit on a bus, train or plane without stretching your legs?
  • Does your father ever put his foot down? How often, and what about?

  • Do you prepare what you are going to say before you have job interviews, or do you just play it by ear?

When your teacher stops you, ask about any questions you aren’t sure about, working together to rephrase and/ or answer them as a class each time.

Without looking above, put one body part into each gap on the next page below.

Check above.

Change groups. Ask each other the questions again, but this time using a fresh copy of the gapped worksheet below and so adding the suitable body parts as you ask the questions.
