Iron TEFLer

The most serious of my ideas on how to rank TEFL courses is waiting for some feedback, so I’m going to deal with my other ideas one by one, starting with the least likely to actually happen.

One way to rank the graduates of TEFL courses would be to have a teaching English version of a cook-off. A selection of people just off courses do a test and an observed lesson, and then their results are judged and ranked. The observers wouldn’t know who took which qualification to save any bias, and it would be limited to people who got just a C/ pass to make them comparable and to fight TEFL grade inflation. They would be given two hours to prepare a 50 minute lesson. The written test could be based on a mix of the TKT and simplified Delta Part One questions.

Alternatively, you could test the teacher trainers in the same way!

So, are you suggesting a written test based on CELTA related products?

And, I assume Alex and TEFLista will be overseeing the observers and their results, or will it be people selected by Alex and TEFLista?

Ranking aside, it would be fun to see a session done like they do on ‘Master Chef’. The two contestants get the same mystery box of ‘ingredients’ and then have an hour to come up with something that will knock the judges socks off! I think there may be a new reality TV series in the making…
