Unhappiness over foreign teachers only rule

Typically for these kinds of situations, it’s the Malaysian government rather the British Council who are responsible for completely excluding Malaysian citizens from a new(ish) mentoring scheme.

The scheme is referred to in Malay as “the Native Speaker Programme,” both on the street and in official documentation.

Nice to see the BC washing their hands of this one – how strange!!

Since when has one’s nationality or passport been an indication of whether you’re a native speaker or not? Surely the term ‘native speaker’ means just that – you speak as a native does, having been raised and educated in that country.

In fact, the woman in the story appears to be bilingual – but that’s not good enough, apparently. Perhaps they meant ‘monolingual Brit’ instead of ‘native speaker’? That’s MUCH better, of course!
