Humans love to debate “Black or white?”, “Right or wrong?”, “Nature or nuture?”, etc etc. 90% of the time, however, the answer is simply “A bit of both”. The important, if much less interesting, question we should usually be answering is “How much black and white/ right and wrong/ nature and nuture?” – and the same most definitely goes for our own favourite TEFL debates such as inductive/ deductive, teacher-led/ student-led, and textbook/ no textbook.
As suggested by the fact that we tend to avoid such discussions in the rest of our lives, it sure isn’t easy to make the topic of a good balance interesting. I have tried my best, however, with this little collection of articles:
A good balance of stand up and sit down activities
A well-balanced use of warmers and fillers
A well-balanced use of pairwork
A well-balanced use of error correction
A well-balanced use of L1 in class
