Is it really nine years since I reviewed it?? That would explain why I long ago lost my copy, so though I’ve already read the whole thing I might even download another copy myself here (free registration needed).

Hi,
I just want to ask if anyone could share the first four chapters of Mario’s Humanising Your Coursebook, which is commented on here. The Delta downloads offer only chapters 5-8. I got interested in the book a little too late for me to download the first chapters, which I assume were offered for download before. I hope someone did get them down on their computer then and, hopefully, could share them now. Am I terribly wrong about it?

I have a feeling the book is still available to buy and under copyright, im which case that might not be legal. Why not just buy a copy?

I guess it is still available on paper. But if it was available for download some two months ago, I take it it wasn’t under copyright then. Can a book be copyrighted in one month and free for download in another? Those who did download it then did it legally because it was available for download. Do they break any law if they share it now, having obtained it free? I don’t think so. But they don’t have to do it. Bookshops still sell the paper copy and the unlucky ones who didn’t manage to download it in time can pay for it now. As simple as that. Thanks anyway.

Dear Adam,
The first chapters are still available for download, and you can get them if you pay attention to the addresses ;) Just tweak the section numbers and months (don’t forget to add “Intro” to Section 1) in the address line of your browser.

Kate’s solved it for us, but the point I was trying to make is that I think it is possible for something to be free to download without necessarily being free to share, but not 100% sure about that.

Dear Kate,
I really don’t know how to thank you for your invaluable help with the first chapters. I did find them all in the way you recommended. How come you know of such secrets? I even wrote the Delta Publishing people about it and they said those chapters had been archived and were unavailable. I am indebted to you, Kate, greatly.

Dear Alex,
I think your approach is too legalistic. And legalism kills the spirit. Would you let a neighbour live without first chapters of a good book rather than share them with him, considering they used to be free for download for some time? As I see it, being free for download is tantamount to being free for distribution by anyone, with no control over it by the offerer. Even if that is not the case, who knows what the real situation is. Surely, it’s not illegal. In such cases, I always follow the logic.

I simply wanted to get the book, just like you, Adam. And looked closer at the addresses. Bingo :)
P.S. Don’t thank me, I’m glad I could share. I’m completely with you on the logic of this free download being really free.

Again, I don’t know what Delta’s position is on this, but if it is still on the site of course there is no reason at all not to download it. If they did decide to make it free for a while without the freedom to share it afterwards, however, that would definitely be their (moral) right – and I’m saying that as someone whose worksheets (here) are available to store, adapt or share as you like as long as you don’t republish them or charge someone else money for something that was free.
