A great lesson for students who are interested in the Olympics but not necessarily the actual sport.
The two things that I did were:
– Take in a mix of real and fake/ joke Olympics mascots for them to work out which are which. I got them to do it as a picture dictation where they described the mascots for their partner to draw (looking at the drawings and giving hints but not being allowed to point or gesture) and then guess which are fake. You could also do it with them just looking at the pictures as long as you gave them some phrases to prompt higher level language.
– Take in the 11 initial candidates for the Sochi Olympics for them to guess which three were chosen.
You could also take in people’s candidates for best and worst mascots plus a few others and get them to rank them.
After any of those three they’ll probably be dying to discuss why the mascots are so crap and what can be done to improve them, and we widened that out to discuss improving the Olympics more generally, with this worksheet:
Loads more Olympics stuff here, the top two worksheets of which are also suitable for the totally uninterested in sport:
Nice. Good of you to incorporate some recent, recognizable events in your lessons.
