More TEFL stats

As TEFLstats.com didn’t really take off, would be very interested in collecting any interesting TEFL stats you may have. Here’s my collection so far:

50 – the lowest legal age limit in this international survey, for teachers in Tanzania

35 – the lowest actual age limit in the same survey, for teachers in public universities in Japan (due  to seniority based pay)

2 million a year – people taking Cambridge ESOL qualifications

740 – Number of members of BAAL as of 15 October 2009

50 billion dollars – The size of the international education (i.e. studying abroad) market, according to EF

400 – The number of EF schools

34,000 – The number of staff in EF

7000 – The number of pages on Onestopenglish

700,000 – The total number of paid subscribers to Onestopenglish in its first ten years

5,000,000 – The number of teachers currently using Onestopenglish (not sure how those two stats connect – lots of corporate subscriptions with teachers with at least 20 teachers??)

101- the number of Masters degrees in TEFL available in 50 British and Irish Universities in January 2010, according to the EL Gazette

97% – pass rate for CELTA course (amongst people who complete the course)

2-3% – number of people getting an A in the CELTA

25 million – number of people taking TOEFL (in its whole history, I guess)

1.2 million – Number of people who took IELTS in 2008
