The most important part of your YL lesson prep

If I have one tip for teaching kids a substantial amount of English, it would be starting all lesson preparation by printing out 20 or so words on the topic of the day, be that sports when doing can and can’t, words beginning with ch when doing phonics, circular foods when doing shapes, classroom objects at the beginning of term, yucky and scary things when doing feelings or things in an amusement park when your book gives you a particularly obscure but fun point to try and make the best of. Even complete beginners are capable of learning every object in the classroom in a matter of weeks, so why young learner textbooks have six items of vocab per unit and then waste hours banging on about plurals with S I will never know.*

*That’s just a turn of phrase, because in fact I do know that it’s because YL textbooks are written with the demands of specific school boards in mind and the rest of us end up teaching that crap too.
