My problems with improvisation Part Two

My main problem with improvisation is: if you do amazingly manage to come up with an outstanding riff in the middle of all that musical masturbation, why not just make a proper song out of that amazing musical moment and so save us the 10 minute guitar solos!?

To put it another way: if you do produce a nearly perfect tune while “jamming” (hate that expression!) with your friends, why not polish it up and make it perfect before releasing it??? Jimi Hen* might be able to get away with it, but ordinary mortals like you and I just cannot!!

Sorry, just remembered that this is supposed to be a TEFL blog. Maybe it’s the six years of wanky jazz in every cafe in East Asia getting me down. Still, must be a metaphor for teaching in there somewhere…

* Japanese short form of Jimi Hendriks
