Or at least there will be a flurry of teaching ideas and worksheets when I get Part One out of the way, which is an EFL Dictionary of Football Words and Expressions. I partly got stuck on this because I hadn’t realised how many there are, and partly because it’s been so much fun to compile, especially as we are including football cliches, cultural tidbits, nicknames etc.
Hopefully some of you, your students or other people you know will also find it fun, because we are posting it one letter at a time on the forums to get feedback on how accurate, understandable and relevant our definitions are. I’ll be abusing my position to make sure that The Seagulls get proper recognition, that The Blues are defined as Birmingham City without Chelsea even getting a mention, and that “Sick as a parrot” gets a five line entry. If you or your students chip in you can get your biases and favourite expressions in there too! UsingEnglish is particularly good at actually getting teachers and students interacting online, so got high hopes for this.
