I guess they sent this to me because I worked in Korea for two years and used to work for EF, but otherwise I am totally unsuitable and so thought I’d share it with the rest of you:
“In the increasingly crowded world of ELT it pays to be into a new market first. EF are therefore offering teachers a once in a lifetime chance to get involved in their new ‘first strike’ teaching team. Teachers will be involved in intensive training in their special residential camp 35 kms North of Seoul in preparation for when new markets open up. We are looking for teachers who:
– Are flexible and self-sufficient
– Have experience of teaching with minimal resources
– Speak basic Korean
– Have experience of teaching students with a negative image of the West and/ or English, e.g. in Saudi Arabia
– Are physically fit
– Have experience of parachuting, rafting. mountain climbing and/ or caving
– Have basic firearms training”
This hasn’t been advertised publically elsewhere, so if you’re interested leave a comment or email me and I’ll put you in touch with the person in charge.
Is there a TEFL Secret Service that I don’t know about? Why would you need basic firearms training, have experience of every extreme sport known to James Bond, and be physically fit? Are Korean students a little on the demanding side?
My job seems rather mundane now. Never mind materials-light teaching, I’m going to ask my boss if I can have a Bugatti which becomes a submarine and has a Martini bar in it.

35 KM North of Seoul? That’s practically the DMZ on the North Korean border. The only line missing from the above is ‘ experience working in labor camps a plus’ …

This was a joke, but I tried to make it believable and hint that they wanted to send people to North Korea the moment the regime fell. Does anyone else think it is strange that we’d half-believe that a TEFL employer would really do that??
