Expect a flood of criminal TEFLers to a school near you

According to the EL Gazette all British Council inspected schools in the UK will need to conduct criminal record checks from 2014, so if the country or school you are in doesn’t insist on such checks a whole bunch of even dodgier TEFLers could even be in a classroom near you soon…

Will those checks include time spent abroad? As many ESL teachers will have lived abroad, the checks won’t be particularly effective if they don’t. They didn’t check that when I had mine done, though this was in the 1990s.

No, but it was partly that which made me notice this story. At least with people in the UK most of the last few years might well have been in the country, whereas when I had mine done for Japan and Korea it was just a UK CRB with no search of what I might have done in the actual countries I’d spent most of the previous 16 years in.
