Prepare a list of directions that refer students to written texts around the room, school or local area, designing it so that putting all the letters together (in the same order) gives them a message such as “Congratulations” or “Say ‘We are the Winners’ to your Teacher”. The first team to say the right phrase to the teacher wins.
Tip: Although it involves a lot more walking around, it can sometimes be easier to make all the directions start from the same starting point each time or different named starting points rather than follow on from each other. This would also mean that teams that just get one or two wrong should still be able to guess the whole message.
Example (Directions from EF Waterloo)
Go out of the school. Turn right into Roupell Street.
Take the first right. What’s the number of the third door on the right? (Write it down). What’s the second letter?
Carry straight on. What’s the name of the building straight ahead? (2 words)
What’s the 4th letter of the 1st word?
Walk around the corner. What’s the first word written on a parking sign on the street on your left (3 letters). What’s the 3rd letter?
Take the first left. Carry straight on, across two cross roads. What’s the first word written on the door on your right just past the second crossroads? (6 letters). What’s the fourth letter?
Carry straight on. Go under the bridge. What number is written on the wall on the left? (6 and 3 letters). What’s the 2nd letter?
After the bridge take the first left. What’s the first word of the first door on the left? (8 letters). What’s the 3rd letter?
Go straight on to the T junction. Look up. What’s the 1st (big red) word? (5 letters). What’s the 2nd letter?
Turn right at the T junction. Go straight ahead to the next T junction. What’s the road called? (3 letters and 3 letters). What’s the second letter of the second word?
Turn left and left again. What’s the second word of the red sign with white writing on your left? What’s the 3rd letter?
Carry straight on. What’s the name of the first shop on your left? (9 letters). What’s the fourth letter?
Now put all the letters together. What’s the message (3 words)?
